Nope, as soon as you want to use SCCM for deploying updates, you need a client on the server. -
The error is on the top of your log snippet Cannot open a hardlink store as a regular store. You're probably using the wrong command line to open a hardlink store.

By using the MDT step Gather it will create the variable IsLaptop for you and then you can use it as usual during the task sequence.

Correct, WSUS 4.0 automatically installs as a new site on port 8530 (http) and port 8531 (https). -

For downloading content a normal DP is enough. It just needs to check compliancy with WSUS/SUP, but that's very little traffic.. -

Via Monitoring > Overview > Deployments and the click View Status on the specific deployment. And yes, it looks a lot different then it did before. -

At the moment you turn some site roles to HTTPS, the client will need a certificate to be able to connect to that role. Another thing you might want to look at is something like Direct Access. -

It also says, Device not found in the database. Make sure it's added, in the correct collection and receives the advertisement..
