JacobE Posted April 22, 2014 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 Hi all, Our maintenance windows here are not functioning correctly, from what I can see. There are no other conflicting maintenance windows setup either. Here is how they are set up at the moment. So the idea is that it starts on the Friday evening every week at 8pm and then finishes on Sunday morning at 5am, giving the whole weekend to allow for deployments. However, after this weekends patch deployments, quite a few machines have reported with error logs like below and are simply in a 'Downloaded Updates' state, where they have not installed the updates in the allocated time. As you can see the Maintenance window is coming on/off at times not specified. Is there something wrong in our configuration? Should they be set up differently? Thanks in advance Jake
Peter33 Posted April 22, 2014 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 Actually your maintenance windows are overlapping right now, because your first one ends saturday at 7pm.
JacobE Posted April 22, 2014 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 Actually your maintenance windows are overlapping right now, because your first one ends saturday at 7pm. Hi there, Well Microsoft best practices state that if the MW is going to be longer than 24hrs (like we are trying to achieve) then they should overlap. Also I don't think the MW is still running because the duration states for 23hrs, not 6 days and 23hrs - Unless you did not mean that? Peter33 Posted April 22, 2014 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 So, do you want to force a reboot on your Clients at all? Otherwise you could just rely to the deadline of the deplyoment, except you don't want them to be installed at any other time. The MW starting at 22:00 are just the non-business hours from the Software Center Settings. Actually i don't see anything unusual in the screenshot of the log. Good point on the non business hours part, didn't think of that. And yes I want them to reboot, we have a 10 hour countdown set up which kicks in after the machines have installed the updates. Going back to the original post, can anyone see a problem with the 2 maintenance windows we have set up?
Peter33 Posted April 22, 2014 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 Well, since a MW is just a timeframe with no own functions, the question is how your retry schedules for updates are configured. Are they small enough to fit into your MW time frame at least once with a 30 minutes buffer to actually perform any action? GarthMJ Posted April 22, 2014 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 IMO, your MW are incorrect. You MW should be: Friday should be 20:00 - 23:59 Sat should be 00:00 - 23-59 Sun should be 00:00 - 05:00 I assume that you want the MW from 8pm Friday until 5am Sunday. JacobE Posted April 22, 2014 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 The problem with that though is that it will treat them all as individual MW's as they do not overlap, so it could potentially cut off installs during this time. Or is that wrong?
GarthMJ Posted April 22, 2014 Report post Posted April 22, 2014 The last time I checked was for CM07 and you could not have a MW greater than 24 hours and MW would not cross over midnight. To my knowledge nothing has changed in CM12. Nothing will get cut off but the installs they might get delayed for a few hours. aka any that will take longer that 4 hour on Friday night (count down+ reboot time + Install + user countdown) The Saturday MW should allow you to install anything. If not then you have bigger problems.

It doesn't mention about the MW cutting off at midnight though, I'm going to look into this.
