shankar.raju.d@gmail.com Posted January 23, 2015 Report post Posted January 23, 2015 Hello Experts, I was asked to configure hardware and software inventory in our environment, currently it is set to run once in a week. Can any one suggest what is the best day and time during the week it can be configured as a best practice? Your response is highly respectful. Thank you. 0 GarthMJ Posted January 23, 2015 Report post Posted January 23, 2015 I always recommend the following: Set Hardware Inventory to daily (simple schedule) Set Heartbeat discovery to daily (simple schedule) Enable all AI classes except for Shortcuts DISABLE Software Inventory, it is useless.
0 shankar.raju.d@gmail.com Posted January 23, 2015 Report post Posted January 23, 2015 Hi Garth, Thanks lot for your response! We have something like the below in our environment, please advise: A simple schedule in place for most of our workstations is running on Fridays at 6:00PM – please verify. If true, it makes sense that many people may have shut their machines off Our client proposed changing to custom schedule that runs at Wed 12:30pm local time for HW & SW that should yield the highest system up time. Your suggestion would be of great help.
0 GarthMJ Posted January 23, 2015 Report post Posted January 23, 2015 No, NEVER use a set time! Only use a simple schedule, otherwise you will likely "kill" your site server or MP. Also I NEVER recommend using SW inv. too much over head! and add too much delays on a CM12 client. http://be.enhansoft.com/post/2013/10/03/Slow-Software-Inventory-Cycle-in-SCCM-2012.aspx

How is this going to help in getting correct inventory from CM 2012, will this effect network bandwidth?
0 GarthMJ Posted January 23, 2015 Report post Posted January 23, 2015 Updating inventory more frequently will ensure that the data is the most current. Of course it will affect bandwidth as you will be doing it more often but it will be much smaller packets. Honestly if you notice any issue then you have much bigger problems with your network.
0 shankar.raju.d@gmail.com Posted January 23, 2015 Report post Posted January 23, 2015 Set Hardware inventory to daily (simple schedule)I like this because it should ensure an up to date HW inventory. I dislike this because HW doesn’t change that often and this seems like it might impact bandwidth Set Heartbeat discovery to daily (simple schedule) – what does this do? Enable all classes except for shortcuts – why? Disable Software Inventory, as this will create too much overhead and add too much delays on a SCCM 2012 client machine. How will we get SW inventory info if this is disabled.
0 GarthMJ Posted January 23, 2015 Report post Posted January 23, 2015 HW inventory is a lot more that physical hardware data, it gathers everything within the registry or WMI. AKA Add/Remove Program data and AI Data.
