Discovering Linux Server/Object Within AD

Recommended Posts

Please help, this is just for Report/inventory (numbers) purpose, we have no plans to manage box via SCCM 2012

We have just implemented SCCM 2012 and its new enviorment. Active Directory System Discovery is enabled and we have over xxx Linux (no clear numbers) box running. As far I know agent is requred to be installed on every linux box for assest managment purpose and for atlest running inventory related reports.

But I got some info that even if we don't install client on all linux box and just create an object in AD with the linux HOSTNAME, it can be discovered within SCCM as Active directory system Discovery is Enabled. I tested it and SCCM is not seeing the linux box even the object exist in AD. I pulled the log and getting

"ERROR: System (HOSTNAME) is a unsupported operating system, unsupported version, or malformed AD entry. Reported system type is: ()."

Can you please confirm if Agent is mandatory on Linux Box, or is there an another way/option without installing agent so that SCCM can discover Linux box within AD without agent being installed.

appriciate for your help

thanks
