Beverage Posted September 28, 2015 Report post Posted September 28, 2015 I have done a bad thing. I deleted the default 64 bit boot image and did not do it the proper way; I just right clicked on it and deleted it. I followed a couple of guides on adding another 64 bit boot image from the deployment toolkit but I can't get it distributed to the server. It looks like it will complete but I get the following error when I look at the details: Distribution Manager failed to find or create the defined share or volume on distribution point. Possible cause Windows NT distribution points might not have at least one available NTFS drive. I know the account can get ot the share; I copied the boot.wim file into the default location and coped it to another directory that is shared out, but the new boot.wim will not distribute to the the DP My SCCM version is 5.0.7804.1600 installed on a Windows 200r R2 server with SQL 2008 R2 server installed for the database. Let me know what else I can provide to help solve this or any other steps you think I can take to get a 64 bit boot iimage back on the server. Thanks! phil_w Posted September 29, 2015 Report post Posted September 29, 2015 When you say you just right clicked and deleted the boot image, do you mean you deleted it from within the SCCM console or you went into RemoteInstall\SMSBoot\x64 and delete the actual file from in there? Beverage Posted September 29, 2015 Report post Posted September 29, 2015 I deleted it from the console. But, it is gone from it's file location too. I do not see it in that location either. I tried to create a new one from MDT, but it will not distribute to the DP. The only reference I found to the old boot image when I search the hard drive is a .tar file in the SMSSIG$ share. Beverage Posted September 29, 2015 Report post Posted September 29, 2015 At this point, should I remove the roles from the server, leave the DB in place, uninstall SCCM and re-install? I know what I did was a dumb thing, but seems like it should be easier to get the boot image back.
phil_w Posted September 29, 2015 Report post Posted September 29, 2015 Don't panic and reinstall SCCM just yet, it could be simple to fix, at worst I suspect you might just have to remove and reinstall the distribution point role. No way a missing boot image should require a complete reinstall. Apologies if this is going over stuff you've already done. It sounds like you've managed to create a new 64 bit boot.wim? The only place you need copy this to is a share that's accessible from your SCCM server (may or may not be on your SCCM server). Go to boot images in your console, select add boot image and browse to your new boot.wim. It should have appeared in the console, but not be distributed anywhere yet. Before you try and distribute it go to.the properties of the boot image and make sure "Deploy this image to the PXE enabled distribution point" is checked. Now try and distribute it. Beverage Posted September 30, 2015 Report post Posted September 30, 2015 Thanks for the response! It is in folder location that the server and account I am using can get to, I also tried to put it back in the old default location too. Made sure that Deploy the image to the PXE enabled DP is checked. When I tried to just do a distibure, no server showed up to choose; I am guessing because I already tried to to distribute it and it failed, so I ran update distribution point.....which shows a green check status at the end but still fails wehn I look at the status....giving the same message: Distribution Manager failed to find or create the defined share or volume on distribution point. Possible cause Windows NT distribution points might not have at least one available NTFS drive. Think I should leave all files in place and remove and re-install the DP role at this point? Thanks! NickolajA Posted September 30, 2015 Report post Posted September 30, 2015 Have you checked the DISM.log file when that error occurs?
Beverage Posted October 1, 2015 Report post Posted October 1, 2015 Nickolaj, I do not have a DISM. log, but I did look at the distmgr.log and saw some errors: Failed to set share security on server\SMSSIG$ Error = 5 Failed to set access security on share SMSSIG$ on server I checked the NTFS share permission and Security permission on that share and it is set the same as my other hidden shares. I did not change anything there, so I imagine the improper method I used to delete the default 64 bit boot image is causing some problem with distributing the new 64 bit boot image. NickolajA Posted October 4, 2015 Report post Posted October 4, 2015 The DISM.log is located in C:\Windows\Logs\DISM. You could try to run a Site reset, to reset the permissions and registry values back to default. Although I'd recommend that you check the documentation for a Site reset so that you're aware of what tasks are performed.
