WDS for deploying OS

i have a question regarding deploying OS , do need to install WDS on the SCCM server in order to deploy images ? as i am using MDT

When you are going to use PXE, you need WDS

if you have more than one PXE boot server you can use a WDS trick to choose which PXE server to boot from

yes i will use PXE because im using the PXE role in SCCM

ok so ill configure WDS on the SCCM server and just change the delay to 5 seconds , and the delay in SCCM to be 3 secs , correct ?

you dont need to change WDS at all, the suggestions in the guide are for a lab where WDS was the sole method of deployment prior to SCCM,

 

use what works for you, and test everything.

ok lets start again i think i missunderstood the issue

now to deploy vista as an example to a client i can use PXE ( the one found in SCCM ) or WDS correct ?

i want to use SCCM so what i will need ? only i need the role for PXE correct ? i wont even install WDS

if you want to deploy vista using PXE boot via SCCM then you'll need WDS installed. do all your configuring in SCCM.

BTW, If you already installed Windows 2003 SP2, you do not need to install WDS.

It is already included in SP2

Then I checked my win2k3 server and yes it already had SP2.

 

You need to go to add-remove programs and then Add/remove windows components.

There you will see WDS, you need to install it!
