Windows 10 Boot Images in SCCM 2012 SP2 CU1

Recommended Posts

I'm in the early stages of building a win10 image for my environment. I've updated my 2012 config manager to sp2 cu1, and I've removed adk 8.1 and installed adk 10. Copied the winpe.wim file and created a windows 10 boot image, loaded all necessary drivers from dell's winpe10.cab site, distributed all content, and made a new task sequence that calls on this boot image.

Created the task sequence media and successfully booted off it. I know I have network and storage drivers (ipconfig and diskpart have run successfully). Upon selecting this new task sequence, it proceeds to "copying windows preinstallation environment" but then fails with the generic error 0x80004005. Here is the last chunk from the log file. My gut is telling me there's a disconnect between the computer preparing a place to download the files to or the system is unable to reach the share on the distribution point. Older boot keys and task sequences still work, so I know the network access account is still functioning. The log is also calling out a path on the E:\ drive ... there is no E:\ drive. Should it have partitioned one out? I'm relatively new to sccm and have just taken it over from a former coworker. Been piecing it together, but I lack the experience in it and this one has me stumped.

Any ideas?!

it can't stage the boot image, and the only reason it would want to do that normally is because

1. the TS starts in windows and it needs to reboot into WinPE

2. the boot image source version has changed (one version on the media, another version on the dp/console)

3. different boot image in the media and the task sequence

can you verify the above ?

1. We're definitely not in windows. This is happening on an unknown computer with the TS boot media usb key.

2. It's possible that the image source version changed, shouldn't the machine prompt for a reboot? (Ah, I see what you're saying ... perhaps that's what it's trying and failing to do)

3. The TS calls on the same boot image, but again, it's possible that the version has changed.

I'll recreate the media again and give it a go.

Additional notes from the midnight oil burn of last night:

I can successfully run an older boot image / media key that's being used for older win7 images. I can select this new win10 TS, it does successfully download and stage the boot image. Of course, being based off an older version of winpe, this eventually fails further along the TS as it's unable to install windows 10. So something with the winpe10.wim file from my install of ADK 10 (or its import into sccm) is not allowing it to successfully stage boot images. I don't plan on deploying images from within windows, so worst case, I just need to recreate my media more often ... but it still bugs me that it can't stage the image.

Ahh, and hot off the presses, you were right! Updating the boot media did the trick, running through the first few stages of the TS right now ... thanks! Gah, feel like an idiot, I swear I must have just lost track of the version.

Now to figure out why it can't stage the boot image.
