simps100 Posted July 10, 2017 Report post Posted July 10, 2017 Hey all I needed to create a collection of machines with certain software installed, did this and it returned 0 - which i found odd, i looked at the values available in the query and it seemed way out dated so started to look into a possible issue with our software inventory not working. I followed this guide here: https://www.enhansoft.com/blog/updated-troubleshoot-configmgr-hardware-inventory-issues I got up to Phase 2 - so the first problem is when i open the MP_hinv.log file I can see plenty of hardware inventory's being returned but no software atall (I assume i should see software and hardware entries) - even though when i look in the IIS logs I can see the software inventory being transferred over to the MP Server. Secondly i went on to phase 3 anyway and searched for the filename of the hardware inventory returned in MP_hinv.log file and cant see this file being processed either - so i wonder if i have a combination of 2 problems here? GarthMJ Posted July 10, 2017 Report post Posted July 10, 2017 First off why would you use SW inventory, it is useless. https://www.enhansoft.com/blog/configuration-manager-and-software-inventory-proceed-with-caution https://www.enhansoft.com/blog/how-do-you-determine-the-length-of-a-software-inventory-scan-cycle https://www.enhansoft.com/blog/slow-software-inventory-cycle-in-sccm-2012 Secondly the log on your mp is mp_sinv.log for SW inv. Thirdly, I would pick one problem and work only on it. IMO I would worry about your HW inv far more than SDW inv.

Thanks for this - i have noticed the speed of the SW inventory is incredibly slow and that all explains alot actually - and looking at the HW inventory it seems to report everything we would actually need so will look into actually disabling the SW inventory. What bought all this up is im trying to create a collection of machines with a particular bit of software installed using a Query using this method: http://www.firstdesk.co.uk/sccm/sccm-2012-create-device-collection-based-on-installed-program/ but get no results - in the query window when i select values i get a list of software but not the program i'm looking for. Strangely though - within reports - if i run the report "Software Registered in Add Remove programs on a specific computer" and run the report against a machine i know has the software - it works fine and i can see the software listed in the list. If i run "Software 02D - Computers with specific software installed" when I select Software product the program isnt in the list - I possibly wrongly assumed this was a problem with our SW inventory! Any ideas what this could be? Edit: Ok i just changed my collection query to: Installed Applications (64) - Display name and its worked a treat - comes back with around the number id expect so that's great, the list which is generated in "Software 02D - Computers with specific software installed" is the same as my original query - where would this come from? Thanks for all the help!
GarthMJ Posted July 10, 2017 Report post Posted July 10, 2017 If you are seeing the SW title within ARP then use that for your collections. http://sccmug.ca/2012/10/08/ie7-collection/ As for report 2d, that using AI data. So you might not have that enabled.
simps100 Posted July 10, 2017 Report post Posted July 10, 2017 Perfect - looks like its actually our AI which is not working - Assumed it would be the SW Inventory but that sounds like something completely different and not needed in our environment. Thanks for all your help!
