My Win7 install via SCCM OSD works correctly, why capture it?

Hi, My question is thus: Apart from the obvious benefit of speed, why would I bother capturing a Win7 image and faffing about with all of the other stuff needed to make it work given that I have managed to deploy Windows 7 Enterprise via SCCM OSD, including all the settings and software my enterprise requires(en-AU Regional settings, network\domain, GPO and so on).

Is there some problem with NOT capturing the deployed (but exactly how we want it) OS and continuing to use our SCCM OSD deploy? I've seen a lot of how-tos saying it's part of the process, but none of them have said why...

the question is, how are you deploying windows 7 currently, are you using the install.wim file from the windows 7 DVD or are you installing windows 7 by using an Install Operating System source... *pointing it to the entire content of the dvd source...*

If you do an install straight from Windows 7 wim files it installs to d: not c: Even if you dont want to do any modifications during a capture & build process you have to go through this process to create a WIM you can use which will install to c:.

Hi, guys, thanks for the replies. I am installing using the full source, ie, it runs through the full install. I'm not just expanding the install.wim, which I realise will cause issues.

Well... by capturing your own WIM image you can save a lot of time with deploying your systems.

If you see no need to make an image, then don't do it I guess.

I can't see a problem doing it the way you explain, but I guess you'll be the one to tell us if there are any problems

yeah, we save an hour or so per deployment by deploying a custom wim file.....
