SCCM OSD Win7 fails without error

I have SCCM SP2 R2 Installed and I am taking a stab at deploying Windows 7. I have followed the step-by-step guide for deploying it (posted on this site) and I am getting stuck. I am not using PXE. I have created the USB bootable thumb drive and have copied the boot.wim over to it that I created in SCCM.

 

It boots fine and starts up the SCCM OSD process but after about a minute it just restarts. It doesn't even format the drive.

 

Here is the TaskSequenceProvider.log file from the SCCM box (is there somewhere else to look for troubleshooting?)

How did you created Media, is it from Rigth click Task Sequence and create Media ?

can you Post smsts.log ?

Make sure you enable F8 support on your boot image so that you can press F8 while in the OSD process. This will bring infront a commandprompt where you should firstly check your network settings and then try pinging your SCCM server on its FQDN.

 

If this works out fine check your %temp% folder for a logfile called smsts.log, extract this log and upload it here.

sounds like its missing network drivers in the boot images (both x86 and x64), so do as the others have advised and enable command prompt support, try ipconfig, if no ip then add nic drivers then update your dps

Ok, thanks to your guys help I have made it a little further

Now it sees the task available; formats the drive; and tries to apply the operating system.

 

I'm getting this error though -

 

Task Sequence: Build and Capture Windows 7 has failed with the error code (0X800700002).

 

I will google this error but I am guessing it still won't be very specific what my issue is.

I fear that error code can mean several things.

 

Use F8 to lookup your smsts.log and then export it to another computer where you can open it with trace32.exe or upload it here.

 

The smsts can most likly be found in your %temp% folder or %windir%\system32\ccm\logs\

Maybe I am doing something totally wrong but I can't get my sccm created usb boot to allow me to get to a command prompt with F8. I have to use a standard winpe to get to the drive but here it is.

Did you find any more log files next to this? Look here: C:\_SMSTaskSequence and %temp%

 

Exactlly in which step does it fail?

 

I would also check my serial key (make sure that the key matches the version of windows your deploying), if unsure try once without it..

Are you using any custom answer file?

Is this a virtual machine or a physical?

I'd suggest not using a USB drive until you know you have everything working. For example, making sure your SCCM boot image has all the needed network and hard disk drivers that you may need. Later when you know your task sequence is working you can shift over to booting from a USB drive.

 

So try creating the OS Image Installation CD .ISO image from the ConfigMgr console, and then create the physical CD, and boot from the CD to see what happens when you don't try using the USB drive...
