i am currently working on my school project about patch management via SCCM 2007. After reading a lot about this topic on different boards i tried to sum up how the patching process works in a simple understandable way:
lets assume:
i have a working windows server 2008r2 active directory environment with sccm 2007 up and running.
i have installed my software update point + wsus3.0
i have installed a distribution point
i have created a few search folders, collection and some templates
everything is configured and working
patching process:
the software update point recieves information about new available updates from microsoft update and redirects this information to my sccm management console.
i can review this information in the sccm management console and decide to deploy a few updates.
the software update point is downloading the requested updates and redirects them to the distribution point.
my clients constantly send information requests about new updates to the software update point.
as soon as the SUP tells them that there are new updates available, the clients start sending requests to the distribution point to download and install the update.
is this the way it actually works ? or did i misunderstand something ?
hopefully my english is understandable im still trying to improve it.
