VM Setup problem for SCCM

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys/Girls,

I was wondering if anyone could help me as I have again run into a few problems.

I am teaching myself SCCM at home using WMWare Workstation version 7.1.3 and have encountered a few problems and I am not sure how to solve them. The setup for my studying is as below:

Host Machine is Windows 7 64 bit with an AMD 955 processor (3.2ghz) and 8gb of RAM.

My VM environment is as below:

Windows 2008 R2 Server (Domain Controller) - Fully patched, running ADDS/DNS/DHCP - I have setup 2 network adapters, 1 for the local VM LAN with the below config:

Adapter 1

IP - 10.0.0.2 (Static)

Subnet - 255.0.0.0

Default Gateweay - 10.0.0.1

DNS - 10.0.0.2

The second adapter is to connect to the internet via my host machine with the below config:

Adapter 2 - Bridged

IP - 192.168.0.10

Subnet - 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway - 192.168.0.1

DNS - Set up ISP DNS servers

Windows Server 2008 R2 (SCCM/SQL Server) - Fully patched, running IIS/File Services/WSUS/BITS/Remote Differential Compression - Setup as per the brilliant guide on this forum, I have also setup this machine with 2 adapters, so that I have one for local LAN and one for internet access for WSUS, these are configured as below:

Adapter 1

IP Address - 10.0.0.3 (static)

Subnet - 255.0.0.0

Default Gateway - 10.0.0.1

DNS - 10.0.0.2

Adapter 2 - Bridged - Setup the same as adapter 2 above, but with IP 192.168.0.11

I have managed to get SCCM up and working but I have found that my SCCM server takes ages to boot (20 mins), and then when it finally does SCCM can not connect to the SQL server database. If I disable adapter 2 on my SCCM server then the server boots up faster and there are no problems connecting to the database.

I thought that maybe SCCM was trying to use the wrong network adapter to contact SQL so I changed the metric on adapter 1 to 10, and the metric on adapter 2 to 20, to try and force SCCM to use adapter 1 but this has not helped and I get the same issues.

I am not sure if this issue is an SCCM issue or a VMWare issue and was wondering if anyone could help me to get this all working.

My reason for setting up my training environment as above is because I wanted to keep it as close to a real world environment as possible by having a domain controller and a seperate server running SCCM/SQL 2008.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
