Windows PE cannot start

Question

I have followed your instructions for configuring SCCM2007 and deploying Vista to a tee but have gotten stuck right after the PXE boot with the following error:

Windows PE cannot start because the actual SYSTEMROOT directory (X:\WINDOWS) is different from the configured one (X:\$Windows.~BT\Windows). This can be configured with the peimg /targetpath command. Please consult the documentation for more details.

Press the OK button or close this message to reboot.

So, I did what it has asked me to do, but I am not 100% sure which PE I should modify.

This is a 100% new installation of SCCM 2007 (no upgrade from SMS)

I appreciate any help and have nothing but good things to say about all of the great stuff on this forum.

added info:

the boot.wim I got is from the Server 2008 DVD (sources\boot.wim)

verify that you have actually distributed and updated the distribution point for that package (IHR00003)

if it is updated and distributed then your network drivers are required in boot.wim

What should the contents of the IIHR0003 folder be?

It looks like mine is the Configuration Manager Client Installation Package.

locate the package in SCCM and verify it has a distribution point

if you check package status logs you should see some info in there about that specific package

without knowing more info about your setup it's hard to say what is wrong but as before i think its either

1. this package is not distributed properly (try re-distributing it)

or

2. the network drivers for your client hardware are not imported into boot.wim and as a result Windows PE cannot continue and unfortunately... reboots the computer without telling you,

therefore the only way to find out is reading your logs, press F8 and see can you PING the SCCM server at this point

i've triple checked your logs

its failing on that point everytime

see here

failed_package.JPG

it refers to the 3: itteration of that package so i really do think you need to start that package again (delete it, recreate it, redistribute it, re update the dp)

also read this > http://www.myitforum.com/forums/m_177318/m..._/tm.htm#177318

What should the share permissions be on the \\server\SMSPKGF$ share be?

When I look at the properties it says:

No permissions have been assigned for this object.

Warning: this is a potential security risk because anyone who can access this object can take ownership of it. The object’s owner should assign permissions as soon as possible.

That is the share permissions.

The file permissions have users with Read access and admin with full control.

thats normal,

the shares are created by SCCM itself so you don't have to worry about that,

try recreating the package that it's complaining about instead

I have re-created that package and now it is complaining it cant get to the next package (IHR0004), which is the boot.wim.

I can run net use m: \\s-iihr21\smspkgf$

It does ask me for a username and password though. That is why I was looking at the user permissions....
