Pre Cache Content on Computers Using Applications

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if pre-caching content on computers is possible using applications? This was possible in version 2007 by making the deployment available now, but scheduling the assignment for the deployment at a future time.

You may be wondering why I need this functionality and why not use a distribution point close to these computers.

We have a number of sites where there are 1 or 2 computers where the bandwidth is limited, say 256k or 512k. Applications that are fairly large in size, say 300MB( MS Office applications like Publisher) or larger will take some time to download and install once the user clicks on install in the software center, if the application was set to download content first then install.

If I could trickle the content or pre-cache the content on their computers a week or so in advance, when I go to notify them or when software center notifies them that there is new software waiting to be installed, when they click on install it's instantaneous, and they don't have to wait hours for the install to finish.

I guess I could use the old method of Packages, but I like the idea of user driven installs so they control when the software installs and when it's convenient for them, since some of the installs may require reboots.

Thanks.
