Question

Hi All

I am very new to SCCM 2012 and currently looking into deploying Win2008 R2 via boot (we have chosen not to go for pxe as we dont have DHCP enabled).

I have read many sites which mention we must build and capture the image - im a bit confused as for a boot image how is this done?

if anyone can point me to a link or youtube vid will be grateful.

many thanks for all help in advance.

Kabir

I'm not sure what you mean. Which boot method do you want to use? PXE, USB flash drives, optical media, and a WinPE WIM installed on the local hard drive are all options. Can you please clarify what you are after?

The build and capture idea may not be possibe without DHCP and as is PXE booting (maybe someone can confirm this to be true?).........You will more than likely have to manually build your custom version of server 2k8 preferably on a VM(recommended) and then use a standalone capture media to capture the image

Hi trevor my appologies for not getting back, for some reason i was not getting notification about your post.

So currently i have done the below:

I have tried the build and capture task sequence and successfully managed to create a WIM file from a deployment. I then added the WIM file to SCCM Operating System Images and distributed this to my one and only DP. i then created a task sequence media wizard, SCCM created a ISO file which i mounted onto my VMware machine.

I got to the part when i enter the network credentials, i noted the MAC address and inputted this into SCCM devices where you click on import device via computer. Once i added the MAC addres, i then cofigured the IP address manually on the OS that i wanted to deploy. After i click on next, i get the below error message.

Any idea why i can not get past this stage - have attempted several different things and still stuck.

many thanks

Posting contents of an e-mail exchange:

Although you may have enabled command support (F8) testing in your boot image, you must update the boot image on your distribution points for this change to take effect. Since you are not using PXE booting, you must also manually update your boot media after the distribution points have finished updating.

The 0x80004005 (Access Denied) error message that you are receiving can be caused by many different reasons, not necessarily permissions related. For example, you might receive this if there is no network connectivity to the ConfigMgr site server, which is obviously not a permissions-related problem. This can happen if:

  • The client cannot route to the site server
  • The client cannot resolve DNS for the site server
  • There is no network access account configured
  • (other reason, stated in the smsts.log)

The first paragraph above should help you get command support testing enabled, and from there, you should be able to find your smsts.log. This will be your best bet in helping you to discover what is going wrong.

Adding email exchange..

Hi Trevor

Many thanks for replying back to me so quick.

Not sure what you mean regarding this – “you must also manually update your boot media after the distribution points have finished updating.”

Also I had some issues updating the distribution point for my boot images so I created new ones – and enabled the command support, distributed them and then deployed the boot images.

I then created a new task sequence media and select boot image. This created fine, I added the ISO file to a Virtual machine and got the same error. When I try press F8 I don’t get anywhere :-(

not sure why i can not get the F8 working... think it would be key in trying to resolve this failed OSD task..
