Content download from DP takes way too long!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

I'm trying to do an Operating System Deployment.

When the Task sequence gets to "Apply Operating System", it starts downloading content from http://[servername].[domain]/SMS_DP_SMSPKG$/...... etc.

This download takes about 2 hours to complete (sometimes even more).

A couple of days ago, when i tested my task sequence for the first time, it downloaded much faster (in like 10-20 minutes).

At that point I started getting some errors though, and the deployment didn't finish successfully, so i removed PXE role + WDS from the server, restarted it, and added the roles back to the server. Since then, the content download has gone very slowly...

I'm running on a pretty fast network.

What do you think could be the cause?

Did you upgrade to SP1 already? This will improve the OSD performance a lot.

You can also allow clients to contact your distribution point anonymously, which will reduce the connection attempts during the deployment. Since SCCM packages are stored as BITS files on the DP this is a big performance killer if not set.

If you chose to store your packages according to the old storage model it will give you an additional boost for big sized files.
