building two redundant Server 2008R2 Gateways for failover

Recommended Posts

Hello guys,

I am planning to set up two server 2008 R2 acting as gateways and if one fails the other one will taking over the job (like VRRP in hardware networking)

The whole environment is based on KVM virtual machines and Windows NLB feature is no option because I cannot handle the virtual IP within KVM.

Behind both are two IIS Webservers in a NLB cluster. That works fine so far. The virtual IP is mapped to one gateway and all HTTPS requests coming in via the

public IP are successfully arriving the IIS/NLB cluster.

But when I add the second gateway, giving it a second virtual IP of the IIS/NLB Cluster, the whole internet connection breaks. On every member server are both

gateways registered with different metric ( tried manually set metric and automatic).

It would be great if someone has just an idea how i can build that setup and i appreciate your help!

Thanks so far

Sebastian
