Server Migration

Recommended Posts

Good evening :)

I have a question. I'm not a simple person but I do find trying to read the articles on Technet like banging my head against a brick wall, so hopefully someone here can put this in plain(er) English :D

I have an incumbent SCCM setup - a primary standalone server, with a secondary server acting as a secondary distribution point. It's become clear that SCCM 2012 has been a bit more of a beast with resource usage than I had originally planned, therefore I'd like to shift it off that server. It's been running for exactly a year.

The incumbent server must remain as-is (but minus SCCM) so no name changes, and the new server will be dedicated to SCCM.

It's already set up and ready to roll - Server 2012, SQL 2012, test SCCM system installed OK. Site code for SCCM needs to stay the same if possible but it's not the end of the world if I can't.

Naturally due to the naming issues, I can't do a full recovery to a second box. I have been able to use the inbuilt migration to migrate over collections, boundaries etc. That works rather well, however the packages/applications is going to be more difficult.

I've followed the technet article to the best of my ability regarding this procedure (Reassignment of a distribution point?) - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg712275.aspx#BKMK_ReassignDistPoint - which doesn't seem to have done much at all, and I believe I may have just misunderstood the article's intent.

My wish is to migrate over the 30-40 applications to the new server. Not fussed about the software updates as it's easy to set those up again. The goal of course is to have as near a full migration from one SCCM 2012 SP1 server to another, and remove SCCM entirely from the original server.

Any guidance on the above would be gratefully appreciated even if it's uninstalling SCCM and doing something differently!
