Software Updates did not run at deadline

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me where to look to find out why software updates would not have run/installed at deadline? We deployed updates last night with a deadline of 8:00pm. We have a nightly maintenance window from 8:00pm to 4:00am. Typically updates run without issue, but this morning I've come in to updates being available for install.

Nevermind i found it.

For any other n00b that may be looking. UpdatesDeployment.log on the client, as if it could be any clearer.

Sorry my brain is apparently sleeping in this morning.

Actually maybe some can explain the problem to me. What i'm seeing doesn't make sense. If the default run time is 35 minutes per update where is it getting 1800 minutes needed for the MW. That would be like 50 updates. But there where only like 8 updates being deployed.

Two things:

  1. The default run time for a software update was about 20 minutes, I thought. I don't have a 2007 environment in front of me right now but you can find it in the properties of a update (tab maximum run time).
  2. The 1800 in the log file is in seconds. So actually it is 30 minutes.

Haha. I see the issue. I went back and looked at the log again because what you said was not making things add up. I initially thought the updates ran at 12am which would have left plenty of time. What I didn't see was the 5 hiding in plain sight in front of the 12. I thought the time stamps were 12:13 am not 5:12 am which is one hour after the MW. All makes perfect sense now. Man this has been a long day. I need a beer. Hopefully I will be thinking more clearly tomorrow.

Thanks Peter for opening my eyes. Much appreciated.
