SCCM 2012 task sequence not installing applications

After upgrading SCCM 2012 RTM to SP1 CU3, my OSD task sequences no longer installs any applications after the OS. Win7 installs with all drivers, PC is added to the domain and the correct ConfgMgr client is installed with a healthy connection to SCCM.

 

However the C:\_SMSTaskSequence folder remains with the 7GB WIM file and none of the 12x applications installed. Network Access Account has with domain admin permissions.

 

Here's the last section of the smsts.log:

Having this exact problem right now

just went from SP1 to R2.

everything works as before, except the task sequence aborts/stops right before getting to the applications step.
then leaves behind the C:\_SMStasksequence folder
