Unable to perform Stand Alone Media Task Sequences using USB HDD's

We have a number of 16GB Sandisk Cruzer Edge USB sticks that we want to use to deploy Win 8.1 OSD Task Sequences

 

I know SCCM won't detect them as they show up as USB Fixed disks instead of removable drives so I created ISO's using the Wizard and xcopied them to USB drives after formatting them appropriatly.

 

WinPE boots fine but then during the initilizing hardware stage we get an error: "Failed to find the current TS configuration path" (log below), we do not recieve this error when using the same task sequence on the same hardware with a USB stick which is recognised as a removable disk.

 

I have confirmed the USB drive is accessible (D: drive)

I have already attempted the below

- Adding a ten second sleep to the boot.wim phase

- Adding Drivers used when the USB isw connected to my laptop to the Boot.WIM

 

I was able to find a discussion on a similar issue here for SCCM 2007 which seems to indicate this is cause by a difference in how SCCM handles fixed HDD's during the OSD task sequence. Unfortunately none of the resolutions there are paticaularly useful as the whole point in these sticks is the ability for non-technical users to reimage a machine themselves when network access is not available or fast enough (some of our branch offices don't have their own DP's for example).

 

Does anyone have any ideas how we can get around this issue? It seems like this would become much more common an issue as the usage of large USB sticks increases.
